Correspondence includes letters to James Simons, Sr., from John Smith Preston and his son John Preston, Jr. in France and elsewhere, and letters from W.F. DeSaussure in Columbia, S.C., regarding a legal case, Preston v. Hampton and Manning. De Saussure's letter (6 Jan. 1866) to James Simons, Sr. also states that the archives of the Society of the Cinncinnati in the State of South Carolina were destroyed when his house in Columbia was burned by Gen. Sherman's army in Feb. 1865 ("It will be an additional satisfaction to Gen. Sherman to know that he has destroyed these sacred relics.").
